While the Union Army is primarily remembered for abolishing slavery after winning the US Civil War, this victory came at a great cost. In particular, Black troops experienced much higher mortality rates than their white counterparts. In this text, we’ll explore some of the health disparities Black soldiers experienced, which arose from segregation and discrimination within the Union Army.
