Learn Biological Classification: Taxonomic Hierarchy and its History

Even though Carl Linnaeus (famous for his binomial nomenclature) is considered to be the father of taxonomy, as he was the first person who systematically classified the natural world, the first documented classification of biological organisms comes from Aristotle! So how do we classify plants, animals and other organisms nowadays? How many kingdoms of life are there and why can’t scientists agree on it? Why does classification keep changing? What are taxonomic ranks (domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, genera, species) and how are they organized in the biological hierarchy?
