Meet our friend, Coraline the coral. Corals are tiny sea creatures which create homes that look like plants or rocks, and these homes can grow to the size of a mountain or a forest, under the water. Other sea creatures like fish, rays and sharks use the coral’s homes to raise their young, and they also use them as a hunting ground. The coral also needs these creatures for its own survival: if any of these creatures disappear, the coral will grow weak and may even die. This is a very serious issue, as corals produce huge amounts of oxygen that all living things on the planet need to breathe and make energy. So if the sharks and rays disappear, so will the corals, and then the whole planet will be in danger. In this episode of N*gen we dive into the Indian Ocean near Zanzibar, to look at how all life on planet Earth is connected through ecosystems. Every living thing exists in a balance with other living things and contributes to the planet’s survival.
