Being the third largest plant family, Fabaceae (legumes or pea family) are so diverse that it might get tricky trying to find the common characters amongst the plants belonging to this family. While flowers are not the most reliable character, the fruit (legume) is one of the most easily recognizable features that will help you identify a member of this family.
