This lesson is tied to the concepts of active and passive transport. Students apply an understanding of active and passive transport in a novel context: the transfer of antibodies from parent to child during development. Through this lesson, students not only gain an enhanced understanding of membrane transport, but they get to hear about the process of scientific discovery right from the scientist themself. This lesson should take approximately one 50-minute class period and is designed to be used in an introductory high school biology course.
