This AP® Biology pathway explores how gene expression is regulated to produce diverse traits in cells and organisms. Learners will investigate the types of interactions that control gene expression, including regulatory DNA sequences, transcription factors, and epigenetic modifications. They will examine how the location of regulatory sequences influences their function in both prokaryotic operons and eukaryotic gene networks. Through real-world examples, learners will examine how binding of transcription factors to promoters can activate or inhibit gene expression, and how these processes lead to differential gene expression, cell differentiation, and phenotypic diversity.
