When we look at the differences in people’s appearances around the globe—such as variations in skin tone, body proportions, and hair texture—it’s clear that the human species is incredibly diverse. Historically, societies have classified people into races based on these differences. However, when we look at our biology more closely, the human species is not as different as it may appear. In this pathway, we explore the characteristics of human genetic diversity, which relates to the patterns of variation in our genes. By grounding our understanding in evolutionary science, we’ll recognize how these genetic patterns challenge historical understandings of race. They reveal that the concept of race in humans has been created by society, and has no biological basis. This pathway forms part of the Racism as a Public Health Crisis cluster.
