Exploring Our DNA

Exploring Our DNA

In this pathway, students connect drug metabolism to their understanding of genetics. In continuing to learn more about the TAS2R38 gene, they extract their own DNA from their cheek cells. They then isolate and amplify a specific short segment of their DNA to determine their taster genotype. Finally, students explore how the human genome was mapped. They also read about methods that scientists use to find the locations of genes, and then use their knowledge to map fictitious traits onto a chromosome.
