How do educators’ beliefs about intelligence shape their students’ performance? While systemic racism and historical inequalities influence academic disparities, educators’ mindsets are another key factor—and one that they are able to change. This pathway examines the mindsets that STEM educators bring to their classrooms. It focuses on the benefits of a growth mindset—the belief that all students can develop their abilities through effort and support—and metacognition—the awareness of one’s own thought processes. It also explores practical ways to use growth mindset and metacognitive learning strategies in STEM lessons. By believing in every student’s potential for growth, educators can help to create more equitable opportunities for success in STEM. This pathway forms part of the Advancing Equity in STEM through Inclusive Teaching cluster. See our equity pledge as part of this initiative.
