Biotechnology

This AP® Biology pathway explores genetic engineering and the molecular tools used to manipulate DNA. Learners will investigate DNA cloning, recombinant DNA, and plasmids, and see how restriction enzymes and DNA ligase enable scientists to cut, join, and recombine DNA. They will explore bacterial transformation, gel electrophoresis, PCR, and DNA sequencing to understand how genetic material is analyzed and modified. Learners will also examine genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the ethical considerations of gene editing, highlighting the real-world applications of biotechnology in research, medicine, and agriculture.
