Duties

  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Biomanufacturing technicians follow detailed, step-by-step written instructions called Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for every task they perform. Getting this right is critical, since even small deviations can affect the safety and quality of medicines being produced.
  • Maintain a sterile workspace Keeping the lab spotless and production-ready is both science and discipline. Technicians clean surfaces and equipment, sterilize tools and growth media, and suit up in protective gear to prevent contamination that could ruin an entire batch of product.
  • Perform cell culture and fermentation Technicians grow and monitor living cells in bioreactors. These cells are the tiny biological factories that produce medicines, vaccines, and other therapies. Keeping them healthy, sterile, and productive is a core part of the job.
  • Purify and filter the final product Once cells have done their job, technicians take over to separate, filter, and purify the product using techniques like chromatography and tangential flow filtration. This downstream processing is what turns a biological soup into something safe enough to put in a patient.
  • Test samples and document results Technicians regularly collect samples from production processes, run microbiology and chemistry tests on them, and carefully record everything they find. Accurate documentation protects patients and is required by law.
