Genetic counselors are like navigators, guiding individuals and families through the complex world of inherited traits. They assess genetic risks, explain DNA findings, and support informed decisions, playing a vital role in healthcare and research.

Duties

  • Interpret genetic test results When genetic test results come back from the lab, they're full of technical terms that most people can't read. Genetic counselors figure out what the results actually mean for the patient and their family. Think of it like decoding a message written in the language of DNA, then translating it into words everyone can understand.
  • Assess genetic risk Genetic counselors are a bit like detectives. They interview patients, dig through medical records, and draw family trees called pedigrees to look for health conditions that run in the family. Then they use those clues to figure out how likely someone is to develop or pass on a genetic condition.
  • Explain testing options There are many different genetic tests, and each one has pros and cons. Genetic counselors walk patients through their options so they can decide what's right for them. The choice always belongs to the patient. The counselor's job is to make sure it's an informed one.
  • Counsel and support families Learning about a genetic risk can be scary, confusing, or overwhelming. Genetic counselors listen, offer comfort, and help families cope with difficult news. They also connect families with specialists and community resources so no one has to face it alone.
  • Document and share findings After each appointment, genetic counselors write clear reports so patients and doctors have a record of what was discussed and what comes next. Many also train other healthcare workers, create educational materials, and take part in research that moves the field forward.
