What unique barriers do Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous students encounter in STEM classrooms? This pathway explores three key barriers to learning and thriving in STEM—stereotype threat, bias, and microaggressions. It examines how systemic racism in society and STEM institutions contributes to these barriers and how they impact the experiences, motivation, and academic performance of racially diverse students. Finally, it introduces strategies for STEM educators to recognize and address stereotype threat, bias, and microaggressions in their classrooms. By doing so, educators can create safer and more equitable learning environments that promote the success of all students in STEM.
